Make your child's day unique with a spa, crafts, pony or zoo party

So it's time to plan another birthday party for your child.

You might be thinking cake, pizza and some goody bags. Maybe you're even considering something a little more unusual this year, like a Strawberry Shortcake theme or a skating party.

But have you considered something truly different? Below are unique party ideas for your son or daughter.

Sparkling prospects

Your child can pan for real gems at a birthday celebration with Party Prospectors.

This company operates a portable mining flume and will bring it to your house for a party. Each kid receives a small pail of mining rough -- sand and dirt enhanced with gems and fossils -- plus a screen and access to a trough of water. Then, as it was during the Gold Rush, each child swishes the screen in the water to reveal gems, fossils and sometimes arrowheads.

Jeff West, owner of Party Prospectors, says the mining rough is available with 40 different gems or 32 different fossils, but can be customized. So, if your child is a real dinosaur lover, you can get fossils instead of gems.

Party packages range from $170 to $195 for up to 12 children. "Children as young as 4 can do this with minimal adult supervision," he says.

Keep in mind that the flume is in a 16-foot trailer, so you need space to accommodate it and access to water.
